Description of the Organization
The West Michigan Sports Commission is a non-profit organization dedicated to bringing youth and amateur sporting events to Grand Rapids. The organization works closely with Experience Grand Rapids and all local businesses to provide visitor's with the best experience in Grand Rapids.
Description of the Tasks/Projects Completed
I continually worked with vendors to organize services like catering, tents, welcome information, and more for upcoming events. I was able to create marketing materials to promote our events. When event days came, I was on-site to assist with setting up, guiding volunteers, and answering questions to visitors.
Skills/Knowledge Gained Through The Experience
The biggest thing I got out of this internship was understanding the importance of multi-tasking and organization in the events industry. Events are planned way in-advance, and you will constantly be working on every event at once. I also gained insight on the amount of work that goes into the actual production of events.
Favorite Part of the Experience
My favorite part of this experience is a tie between spending time on-site on event days and working with programs to design some marketing materials. I did not think I was interested in marketing, but this internship brought out a more creative side of me that I did not know I had.
How the Experience Influenced Future Career Goals
This internship solidified my plan of pursuing a career in the events industry. I plan to search for a job in event coordinating. I also gained a deeper love for Grand Rapids, and I would love to stay in West Michigan if an opportunity arose.
