Description of the Tasks/Projects Completed
I helped in the process of a new product launch, which involved creating CAD parts, assemblies and drawings. It also required me to have prototypes constructed and tested in order to verify fit and function. I also worked on a product redesign, which was meant to be a cost savings project for the company.
Skills/Knowledge Gained Through The Experience
I learned many of the steps involved in a new product launch, as well as the manufacturing processes involved to create specific designs. I also obtained a better understanding of the interdependence of groups within the company and how decisions need to be made. Helping with a new product launch also allowed me to work on my CAD abilities. It also gave me the ability to analyze the design and manufacturing for a complex combination of product options.
Favorite Part of the Experience
This co-op allowed me to take a theoretical design and turn it into actual product. It is very exciting seeing concepts brought to life and with that comes a sense of accomplishment. Being able to see the successes and failures of my designs helped me to create even better designs, which will ultimately lead to customer satisfaction.
How the Experience Influenced Future Career Goals
This experience has made me realize that product design, even though it may be tedious at times, is extremely exciting because it requires a long process, but in the end you come up with something tangible. This makes me want to dive deeper into product design, as well as manufacturing, in order to understand how people and systems interact to create a strong product.
