Description of the Organization
Axis Company provides custom automation integration solutions to customers across the United States. They are a relatively small company located in Walker, Michigan.
Description of the Tasks/Projects Completed
This internship began with an assignment to use AutoCAD Electrical to design a practice print-package based on requirements from my supervisor. From there, I moved on to updating the companyýs AutoCAD Electrical title block and AutoCAD Electrical tutorials. I was then assigned the task of creating templates to increase the efficiency of the companyýs lock-out-tag-out documentation and bill of materials generation. These tasks formed the bulk of my semester. Furthermore, I was given the task of utilizing my templates on multiple customer jobs. Finally, I gained firsthand experience on the floor shadowing the companyýs electricians and familiarizing myself with the build stage of the engineering process.
Skills/Knowledge Gained Through The Experience
Through this experience I learned how to use the AutoCAD Electrical software. Additionally, I strengthened my problem-solving skills by utilizing the VBA programming language to design company templates for multiple applications. Finally, I gained hands-on experience working with the companyýs electricians in building and wiring electrical panels for custom automation cells.
Favorite Part of the Experience
My favorite portions of this experience were first, spending time on the floor learning directly from the electricians and gaining invaluable hands-on experience with the cell build process. Additionally, I enjoyed the opportunity to implement the templates I had designed into customer jobs and then further improve the templates based on those experiences.
How the Experience Influenced Future Career Goals
This experience has been an excellent opportunity for me to learn about controls engineering and will be useful as I move forward into my career. While there are certainly aspects of the field that I have not yet been exposed to, I have enjoyed my experiences with it so far and I am excited for my next rotation where I will learn even more of what this field has to offer.
