Description of the Organization
Autocam is an automotive precision manufacturing company which focuses on continuous improvement. Autocam strives to be on the cutting edge of technology and invests in green processes including recycling and pollution prevention. Autocam has recently joined with NN Inc. and therefore has expanded extensively.
Description of the Tasks/Projects Completed
I focused on continuous improvement throughout the semester. I completed a damage study to reduce scrap rates. From this, re-designs of trays and fixtures were made to make the process more efficient. These re-designs required reprogramming of robots and troubleshooting. I also created a design of a tray cover to implement in order to keep parts from coming out of the tray while they go through a chemical wash.
Skills/Knowledge Gained Through The Experience
I have learned new manufacturing processes which will aid me in any engineering job I will have in the future. I have been introduced to many new machines and in the future I hope to run these machines in order to troubleshoot better. I also have learned how to use lab equipment and different measuring techniques.
Favorite Part of the Experience
My favorite part of the co-op was troubleshooting under pressure. There were a couple of times that machines were down and needed to be fixed immediately in order to meet production goals. This was the most exciting part of the experience. I also loved seeing my designs and re-designs improving the previous process which was in place.
How the Experience Influenced Future Career Goals
The idea of continuous improvement really excites me. This means innovation is constantly in motion and every process can be improved upon. This company is always willing to invest in something that will set them apart. For the future, I would like to be on a team with this goal in mind. Overall, this experience has verified that I am in the right career path.
