Employer: Genesis Seating
Job Title: Engineering Intern
Major: Mechanical Engineering

Description of the Organization

Genesis Seating specializes in the assembling of furniture. They produce chairs and other products for companies such as Herman Miller, Steelcase, and Haworth. Each product is made in a cell and the Engineering department works with changing the cell layouts and improving overall efficiency at the company.

Description of the Tasks/Projects Completed

During this rotation I was tasked with designing a layout for a cell where a new product would be assembled. This included creating many drawings and ideas for how the cell would be arranged, as well as creating carts and racks to hold different tools and parts that would be used to assemble the chair.

Skills/Knowledge Gained Through The Experience

This was much different than my first rotation at the company because it was less building and more designing. Previously I did a lot of welding, but that was to understand the challenges of creating something once it was designed. During this rotation I had some experience with that and I could focus more on making designs for carts and racks that were functional and would improve efficiency within the cell.

Favorite Part of the Experience

My favorite part of this experience was getting to work closer with my supervisors. I was able to learn more about the company this rotation and the positives and negatives the company had each month. I met more people from other departments which also helped with understanding the company better, and I was able to see how the work I do directly impacts other people in different departments.

How the Experience Influenced Future Career Goals

After this rotation, I feel like I have a better understanding of a work environment and I would like to improve on that aspect more in my third rotation. I would like to to work with other departments that are working on the same project as me.
