Description of the Organization

Autocam Precision Components Group's mission is to be the worldwide leader in the manufacturing of precision components. This mission is met by focusing on continually improving processes, and therefore improving products and services to meet and exceed customer expectations with a goal of having zero impact on the environment. Autocam specializes in single-digit micron tolerances. Autocam was recently acquired by NN, Inc. Autocam consists of 16 facilities across four continents, and NN, Inc. has 42 facilities worldwide.

Description of the Tasks/Projects Completed

Many of the most successful engineers and managers at Autocam started their careers by operating machinery. For this reason, I spent the first half of my summer in a machinist and lab technician role. I was trained and gained operational certification for a CNC multi-spindle lathe as well as a multi-spindle screw machine. Both of these machines manufacture components for gas direct injection fuel pumps in high volumes and with high precision. I also performed first piece inspections using various gauges and lab equipment. Some of this equipment measured surface finish, surface profile, and roundness, capable of measuring fractions of nanometers. The second half of my summer was spent working in the engineering department. I assisted with research and development for a new Autocam part. I designed and performed studies to monitor critical dimensions at various stages in the product's manufacturing cycle to identify points in which problems are occurring. I also performed a gauge correlation study where I compared results from various measurement devices to identify the most efficient gauging method for accurate, automated, 100% inspection. I assisted with the assembly of an automated work cell and learned about how robots and vision systems can be used to inspect critical features and dimensions.

Skills/Knowledge Gained Through The Experience

I gained large amounts of knowledge relating to machining and quality control this summer. I learned about various machining processes, as well as the advantages and disadvantages of each. I learned about various cutting tools and the importance of considering tool cycle life. Through taking several training courses, I learned how to use effective problem-solving techniques, how to hold a successful meeting, and how to properly communicate between managers, engineers, and machinists. I learned about Autocam quality control processes as well as standardized processes that reduce the amount of defective parts being made. Through working in the engineering department, I learned how to communicate effectively with others and I practiced time management. I learned how to use statistical software packages to indicate the capability and performance of a process. I continued to practice my public speaking skills by discussing my research at various meetings. I also learned that a job is the most enjoyable when productivity and office humor are kept at a balance.

Favorite Part of the Experience

My favorite part of this co-op was the variety of work assignments. When it comes to tasks at work, I prefer a balance between design work, problem-solving, and resolving problems through corrective actions. At Autocam, this balance was met. I had a large variety of work assignments during my co-op. This trend will continue as my role at Autocam becomes more advanced. These factors, in combination with an enjoyable work environment, has made my experience very positive.

How the Experience Influenced Future Career Goals

My experience at Autocam has further confirmed my interest in design and manufacturing within the automotive industry. I believe that importance of work is validated when the result can be seen functioning in the real world. While many of Autocam's components are found buried deep inside of an engine compartment, their existence is critical for the engine's performance. The precision of Autocam components ensures that the vehicle occupant's safety is the top priority. It is rewarding to know that I am responsible for the functionality and safety of fuel pump systems that are installed in vehicles that are on the road today.
