Description of the Organization
Magna is a leading full system supplier for innovative vision systems to the global automotive industry. Magna is a large corporation with many different teams who develop, manufacture, and supply a large range of automotive components. The Engineering center for mirrors and lighting is where many divisions work together to develop and test current products. Each division is specialized and skilled in orchestrating the development of specific components such as inside mirrors, outside mirrors, and door handles. Although there are more divisions, each one is important for implementing their individual specialties which contribute to the completion of all products Magna Mirrors and Lighting develops. Although the company is large, each internal division offers a personalized experience with different people and a concentration tailored to ones own skillset.
Description of the Tasks/Projects Completed
As a mechanical engineer in the inside mirrors division, I was tasked with finding solutions to problems or assignments given to me by other engineers. These assignments often consisted of designing/building parts that aid in different methods of testing mirrors, testing the functionality/durability of inside mirrors, and collaborating with team members on enhancing my skills and knowledge as an engineering student.
Skills/Knowledge Gained Through The Experience
I gained great insight into the manufacturing and automotive industry. I learned how companies and divisions interact with each other along with modern engineering methods and processes. Specifically, I learned how to format documents, gather accurate and reliable data, and how to hand mill parts made from different materials.
Favorite Part of the Experience
My favorite part of this co-op experience was meeting and working with my co-workers. They all have taken time to teach me what they have learned and to mentor me in improving my skills and knowledge in every area. These are all skills that will make make me a better engineer and will further my career wherever I go.
How the Experience Influenced Future Career Goals
This experience has solidified my desire to be a mechanical engineer. After seeing different types of engineering at work, I am confident in my path as a mechanical engineer. I would like to learn more about different industries and how they compare along with how they use mechanical engineering to achieve their goals.
