Description of the Organization
Grand Rapids Community College is a member of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), Division II and is located in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The athletics program consists of 8 sports; Women's Volleyball, Men's and Women's Basketball, Men's and Women's Cross Country, Softball, Baseball and Golf. Together the sports teams have approximately 150 athletes.
Description of the Tasks/Projects Completed
Helped develop a student-athlete success program. Helped with study tables, progress reports, scheduling classes for student-athletes, helped with compliance paperwork, game day operations, and marketing. I also wrote up recruiting letters that we can send to prospective student-athletes, designed end of the season surveys for our student-athletes, setup exit meetings with student-athletes who have completed their two years in athletics at GRCC. Organized volunteer opportunities for student-athletes, made travel itineraries for the volleyball team, as well as order food for athletes before each home game.
Skills/Knowledge Gained Through The Experience
I learned how important it is to be able to adapt to change. Sometimes I would be working on a project, but a student would come in and need assistance with classes and I had to be able to stop what I was doing, help them and go back to what I was doing prior.
Favorite Part of the Experience
Being able to gain real world experience as well as have the flexibility to be able to take initiative and incorporate new ideas into the athletic department at GRCC.
How the Experience Influenced Future Career Goals
It will have allowed me to gain prior experience that employers are looking for and possibly help me gain a job at the college and to have expanded my network.
