Experience Information

Employer: GVSU
Job Title: ARF Intern
Major: Sport Management
Received Credit: Yes
Paid: Yes
Abroad: No

Description of the Organization

I did my SPM 490/495 internship at GVSU's Recreation Center as part of the management team. I worked alongside the Associate and Assistant Athletic Directors of the University, as well as three Facility/Event Coordinators, and two GA's. We also oversee a student staff of 60+.

Description of the Tasks/Projects Completed

I conducted interviews of potential student employees, and Grad Assistants. I was delegated projects dedicated to renovating the rec center and working with vendors. I helped introduce leadership opportunities to the students working in our facilities by giving them chances to take on more responsibility.

Skills/Knowledge Gained Through The Experience

I learned how to efficiently manage a group of my peers. I learned how to communicate professionally both verbally and through various forms of online communication. I also polished my ability to handle multiple projects at the same time when working on a deadline.

Favorite Part of the Experience

My favorite part of this experience was having the opportunity to work up close and personal with people in all kinds of different positions working in college sports. I had a feeling before this experience that college sport was where I wanted to get my start professionally, but now I am for sure.

How the Experience Influenced Future Career Goals

As I just stated, this experience gave me the opportunity to work with a wide range of different positions in college athletics. Going into this experience I had my mind set on becoming an Athletic Director and afterwards, my goals have not changed. I would however, not mind working as an Assistant or Associate AD in the realm of facilities now!
