How did we do with utilities this past fiscal year?
How did we do with utilities in FY18? To put this into perspective we compared where we were 15 years ago. Since FY04 we have completed
over 300 energy saving projects and on a square foot basis our electrical consumption has dropped 28.2%, gas consumption dropped 34.4%, steam consumption dropped 10.7% and water consumption dropped 33.8%. The square footage of the university has increased by 62.6% over that same time frame.
The types of energy projects completed over the past fifteen years include the following:
- Various Lighting Projects
- Installation of Variable Frequency Drives
- Purchasing power through the open deregulated market
- Steam Traps & Steam Eye – Remote sensing for failures
- OCC and CO2 Sensors used for Demand Ventilation Control
- Energy Contests amongst Housing Units
- Temperature Setbacks – Unoccupied, Standby and Occupied
- Installation of a new Chilled Water Bypass
- Boiler Tune-ups
- Burned different Fuel based on market conditions
- Installation of an Aircuity system for Demand Ventilation Control in labs
- Interconnection of Chilled Water Loop
- Modification to Heating & Cooling set points
- Steam Temperature Setbacks – Holiday breaks
- AHU Scheduling coordinated with lighting and morning warm-up
- Rain Gauge to assist in Scheduling Irrigation
- DDC Controls/Compressor savings
- Lighting Adjustments / Scheduling
- Aggregating Natural gas to broker, not utility
- Choosing Energy Source based on Economics – elected to heat by Natural Gas in lieu of Steam
- Plumbing fixture selection providing water reduction
- Coordinated snow melts sensors / improved operational performance
- Adjusted mixed air temperature set points
