Special Circumstance & Financial Hardship Requests

We understand that every student's situation is different, so we have provided you with several different options to review if you find that you are in need of additional financial aid.  From the generosity of the GVSU community and our partners, we have been able to provide institutional grants to those who have faced economic hardship.  Financial hardship funds are available to help student's meet their basic needs, and help cover educational costs (such as housing, food, and textbooks) that a student could not otherwise pay out of pocket.  All financial aid options offered, including loans, must typically be utilized prior to offering additional grant funding.

Step 1: If you are eligible to file a FAFSA and have not done so, please start by filing today.  Please click here for more information about filing the FAFSA.  Please allow 3-5 business days for us to receive your FAFSA and prepare your award.  Once your award is ready for review, please make decisions in myBanner.

Step 2: In the event that you or your family has had a change in their financial situation from what is reported on the FAFSA, the Special Circumstances process can help us create a financial aid package that more accurately reflects that situation.  If a reason from the chart below fits your situations, complete the Special Circumstances Form

Step 3: In the event of a financial hardship or need for emergency funding, please complete the Financial Hardship Grant Request form. By completing this form, you will be considered for many different types of funding, including: Textbook & Supplies Fund, Momentum Fund, Student Support Fund, Opportunity Fund, and GVSU hardship dollars. In most cases, all self-help financial aid, including student loans, must be applied for and utilized.  Please keep in mind that funding is limited and not guaranteed.
