Candace Phenix joined the GVSU community in June as deputy general counsel.
In that role, Phenix assists the general counsel and advises
individual departments on legal compliance. She said she enjoys the
campus community and finds her job very rewarding.
“GVSU has an excellent reputation in the community, locally and
statewide,” said Phenix.
Her responsibilities consist of fielding questions from the different
campus departments, helping to create new policies and navigating
compliance with state and federal regulations. Although she doesn’t
deal directly with students, Phenix said she loves helping behind the scenes.
Phenix spent nine years in private practice and then six years as the
in-house counsel for Liberty Mutual Insurance. She graduated from the
Michigan State University College of Law and earned a bachelor's
degree in English at Oral Roberts University in Oklahoma. During her
senior year at Oral Roberts, Phenix spent a short time dual-enrolled
at Grand Valley to be closer to family.
She has five children who, she said, are all very involved in the community.
“We are an active household. Most of my free time is spent having fun
with my children,” said Phenix.
Her family enjoys staying home for game and movie nights, going to
local theaters to see plays and musical performances and staying active.
