More than 100 emergency department physicians, advanced practice providers and other support staff completed a day of training at the Simulation Center in the DeVos Center for Interprofessional Health.

Katie Branch, director of simulation, said it was the first time Grand Valley hosted the Emergency Medicine Fall Symposium. Attendees were from Emergency Care Specialists, which provides emergency department professional services for Corewell Health hospitals in West Michigan.

"Hosting this conference aligns with Grand Valley’s mission of public service and empowering learners in their professions,” Branch said.

Participants rotated through various simulations throughout the center and experienced many of its high-tech and high-touch features. Branch said simulations were primarily based on low-frequency, but high-risk occurrences in emergency departments.

"This gives us an opportunity to have them practice these skills in a safe environment," she said.

Dr. Eryn Hart gave instructions on how to deliver a baby with shoulder dystocia, when one or both shoulders are stuck after the head appears. By using the pregnant mannequin, conference attendees practiced placing pressure on the mother's abdomen while maneuvering the baby's shoulders.

The Anatomage Table, which presents 3D views of anatomy cases, and the virtual reality immersive suites, where interactive walls project a scenario, were also incorporated into the conference.

With more than 67,000 square feet, the Interprofessional Simulation Center is one of the largest interprofessional, comprehensive, state-of-the-art simulation centers in Michigan.
