This past August, Mackenzie Wellman ’10 did something she has been doing now for the last 12 years, she made a gift to support current students. After a transformational experience during her own study abroad trip in 2007, Mackenzie has made it a priority to ensure other students have the same opportunity. She makes her annual gift to the First Generation Study Abroad Scholarship.

“It is most important to me to support students who may not have the resources to attend college, or the extra programs offered,” explained Mackenzie. “I am passionate about helping others get the full experience of growth and learning that GVSU can give!”

In 2007, when Mackenzie was an undergraduate at Grand Valley, she had an opportunity to study abroad in Guilin, China with the Eastern Philosophy program. This trip introduced Mackenzie to a world of travel and a better understanding of herself.

“During my time at GVSU, my study abroad trip was the most impactful experience. My summer abroad sparked a love of travel and has since brought me to 35 countries,” she shared. “Being away from home and in a new country, it helped me realize what I wanted to do with my life after college.”

Grand Valley holds many memories for Mackenzie, and her experiences are what encouraged her to start giving back as a young alumna.

“College was a special experience that helped me grow as a person and into the professional that I am today. I feel a lot of gratitude towards GVSU for being the institution that supports their students,” said Mackenzie.

When opportunities became available to support additional study abroad programs, Mackenzie felt inspired to give a little more than usual.

“If I can help students who would not have the opportunity to study abroad create a meaningful trip, then I can truly feel my gift is fulfilling,” she said. “I hope the students who study abroad with my gift experience knowledge that can only be gained outside of our comfort zone. When they get to spend time in another country, for an extended period of time, I can only hope they return as better citizens at GVSU, West Michigan, and in their future careers.”
