Prior to starting the Winter 2021 semester, Payton, Class of 2023, was already facing financial hardships. An unexpected expense left Payton wondering how she would be able to pay for rent.

As an advertising and public relations student, Payton planned to take a photography class that would count towards multiple degree requirements. She later found out the class required students to have access to a camera, which she did not have.

Without enough funds to cover both rent and the camera, Payton was worried she would not be able to make both payments.

“I wasn’t sure how I was supposed to make that decision. I needed to pay rent to attend school, but I couldn’t take the class if I didn’t have a camera,” she said.

The Student Support Fund helped Payton by providing her with emergency financial assistance, which allowed her to pay rent on time and have the required camera for her class.

“I was so relieved. It may seem like a minor inconvenience, but this course saved me from having to take multiple separate classes. It saved me time towards my degree and was something I was interested in,” said Payton.

The Student Support Fund helps students from all different backgrounds facing unexpected financial hardships.

“To the donors who gave to the Student Support Fund, I cannot thank you enough. You are the reason I was able to pay rent and take a necessary class for my degree,” said Payton.

Payton hopes to stay in West Michigan after she graduates and work in the public relations field.
