Department of Public Health Awarded Grant
February 11, 2021
In March 2021, Lowell Wellness Camp will be piloted to its first-ever cohort of middle school students from Lowell Middle School. The program is funded by a $12,000 Lowell Community Foundation grant recently awarded to the Lowell Public School system in collaboration with GVSU Department of Public Health. This sustainable community partnership has held several initiatives since 2014. It has also created a ton of opportunities for Lakers to get involved, gain experience, and learn about grant-funded projects.
Wellness Camp will be delivered in an online, synchronous format via ZOOM with wellness coaching expertise of graduate students from the Master’s of Public Health Program at GVSU and led by the department’s Special Project’s Graduate Assistant and MPH candidate, Krystal Bunch, that serves as camps’ Educational Coordinator.
Lowell Wellness Camp aims to promote health education and strategies to improve health behaviors in the focus areas of nutrition, physical activity, and mental and emotional health. This grant approval will not only allow for implementation in a virtual setting to ensure the safety of participants during COVID-19, but it offers the opportunity to provide a hands-on supplemental reflective workbook and toolkit for each participant to aid in their learning.
