Nursing Student Wins Third Annual GVSU 3-Minute Thesis Competition

Kathryn Ellens, a graduate student in the Doctorate of Nurse Practitioner with an emphasis in the adult/older adult advanced practice program at GVSU, won the third annual 3-Minute Thesis Competition. Kathryn’s research presentation was titled, “Effect on Opioid Use following the Implementation of Evidence-Based Pain Management Practices for an Observation Unit.” As winner of the GVSU 3MT competition, Kathryn received a $500 cash prize and will represent GVSU in April in the MAGS regional competition.
The second place winner of GVSU’s 3MT competition was Christopher Timmer. Christopher is a graduate student in the Master of Health Science in Biomedical Sciences program. Christopher won a $250 cash prize with his research titled, “From the dinner pot to smoking pot; how a better understanding of cannabidiol could alleviate anxiety and modulate hunger.”
The third place winner of the competition was Sarah Thompson. Sarah is a graduate student in the Master of Cell and Molecular Biology program. Sarah won a $100 cash prize with her research titled, “Enhancing Fast Scan Cyclic Voltammetry detection of dopamine with tryptophan.”
The audience voted Chelse Hawkins as the People's Choice award winner. Chelse is a graduate student in the Master of Education in College Student Affairs Leadership program. Chelse won a People's Choice prize bag with her research titled, "Undergraduate Student Persistence: An Examination of the Relationship Between Use of Counseling Services and Emotional Resiliency Development."
Fifteen graduate students competed in the third annual GVSU 3-Minute Thesis Competition on February 15. Students had three minutes to present their research to a panel of eight judges. Congratulations to the winner's and good luck to Kathryn at the regional competition in April!
