Communications Graduate finds success at Stephen F. Austin University in Texas
October 09, 2017
Kevin Meyer, a former student in the Master of Science in Communications graduate program, has found great success at Stephen F. Austin University in Texas, and attributes much of this success to GVSU and the opportunities the university gave him.
Kevin’s decision to attend Grand Valley for graduate school followed the opportunity to be a Graduate Assistant in the GVSU Athletic department. He was able to work with a fellow Central Michigan University Alumni, Tim Nott, and had the opportunity to gain valuable experience in the sports information field before graduating. In regards to his graduate education experiences, Kevin said, “My professors were excellent, [the Graduate Program Director] was a wealth of knowledge and advice…I had a somewhat unconventional route, needing to finish the program in two years or risk having to delay my career to finish it after my GA position was finished. [The Graduate Program Director] continued to help me throughout my time in the program, and also aided me heavily in the job search…”
Kevin knew his next steps after graduate school would take him somewhere other than Michigan, due to the few options that were available to him, so when he found a job opportunity at Stephen F. Austin University in Texas, he decided to take it. He is now the primary media contact at the university for women’s soccer, women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, and men’s and women’s track and field. He publishes stories about the teams, monitors and posts on the teams’ Twitter and Instagram accounts, designs and creates media guides and programs for the teams, and has the ability to nominate student-athletes for both athletic and academic awards.
Kevin said, “I am proud of my time as a Laker, and I’m now a very proud alumnus of Grand Valley State University. I have this job in Texas, my first career job, because of GVSU and the opportunity they gave me…I highly recommend GVSU’s graduate programs to anyone who may be looking to further their education, in the hopes that they may receive the same great experience that I did.”
