Student Achievements
Carly Brouwers' Research
September 30, 2019
Carly Brouwers, a second year student at GVSU pursuing her Master of Science in Biology, received a fellowship for a research project studying the demographic and spatial patterns of Eastern box turtles and Blanding’s turtles in Grand Rapids. Both species are at risk due to habitat fragmentation and loss that comes along with urban development. The goal of her research is to provide insight on the overall health and viability of both species of turtle to aid in management decisions. This research was made possible through the GVSU Presidential Research Grant and the NASA Michigan Space Consortium Fellowship. Carly is working closely with her mentors, Dr. Jennifer Moore, Dr. Alexandra Locher, and Dr. Paul Keenlance to produce a successful study. She is enjoying being a part of the relationship building process between GVSU and other local organizations such as John Ball Zoo, Blandford Nature Center, and Kent County Parks. She is excited to see the outcomes of her research on these native species. Carly is an outstanding student who is engaging in a great opportunity. Great job Carly!
