Arbor Academy wins excellence award

Arbor Academy, a Grand Valley State University authorized charter school, has won the School of Excellence Award from the Michigan Association of Public School Academies (MAPSA). The award is given to the year’s outstanding public charter school.

“This award is a culmination of a lot of hard work by a team of people, including Grand Valley, Foundation for Behavioral Resource Management Company, teachers, students and the administration,” said Paul Doersam, director of schools and previous principal of Arbor Academy. “Winning the excellence award is a validation of all components coming together to create what Arbor Academy is today.”

Arbor Academy, a K-6 school in Battle Creek, opened in the fall of 1998 and currently serves 185 students. Enrollment is limited to 20 students per class with a student-instructor ratio of 10-1. Their mission is to provide a high quality general program of fundamental education in reading, mathematics, science, social studies, conduct, art and health and physical education.

MAPSA represents more than 106,000 students and 5,000 certified teachers in 243 public charter schools across the state. Grand Valley State University and its 33 public school academies serve about 18,000 public school students and their parents.
