Grand Valley celebrates Commencement Saturday

Some 900 Grand Valley students will celebrate a job well done as they participate in December commencement at 10 a.m. on Saturday, December 12, at Van Andel Arena in downtown Grand Rapids.

Mary Sue Coleman, president of the University of Michigan, will be the commencement speaker. Coleman is the 13th president of U of M, and was appointed in 2002.

Also at commencement, Grand Valley will present an honorary doctor of arts degree to Mary Ann Keeler, a longtime supporter of public arts in Grand Rapids. Keeler and her husband, the late Miner (Mike) Keeler, played significant roles in the revitalization of downtown Grand Rapids. The Keelers are major Grand Valley benefactors; they gave a leadership gift as the first commitment to the university's proposed Mary Idema Pew Library Learning and Information Commons.

The Alumni Association will honor Paul E. Fishback, professor of mathematics, as the recipient of the 2009 Outstanding Educator Award and Troy A. Hardy, owner of Meltro  Music in Los Angeles, as the recipient of the 2009 Distinguished Alumnus Award.
