Grand Valley singers win awards

ALLENDALE, Mich. -- Students from Grand Valley State University scooped up nearly a dozen awards at the National Association of Teachers Singing statewide competition. More than 30 voice students and five faculty, staff and student collaborative pianists participated in the competition held November 7 at Western Michigan University.

Students who won awards are:

Lily Guerrero - 1st place, 3rd Year College Women
Claire Chardon - 1st place, 2nd Year College Women
Xander Greene - 1st place, 1st Year College Men
Matt Morey - 2nd place, 4th Year College Men
Kalli Siringas - 2nd place, 2nd Year College Men
Reece Smith - 2nd place, Musical Theatre
Kaylin Heydenburg - 2nd place, Advanced
Grayson Barton - 3rd place, 1st Year College Men
Jon Berry - 3rd place, 1st Year College Men
Amy Standel - Honorable Mention, Musical Theatre

Danny Phipps, music department chair, said that the presence of so many talented students from Grand Valley's vocal area at this event is a testament to the hard work and dedication of the university's very fine vocal faculty members. Professors Kathryn Stieler and Dale Schriemer, and adjunct faculty members, Joshua Baum, Donna Green and Elizabeth Stoner each had students awarded in the competition.  

"I am especially proud that every vocal studio in our department was recognized with these awards," said Phipps. "I also pass on a special thank you and recognition to Professor Stieler for her work in bringing the NATS Michigan Chapter Student Auditions to our campus next year."
