Grand Valley State University President Thomas J. Haas published an op-ed in Tuesday's Grand Rapids Press in which he makes the case that state support for Michigan's universities is a moral obligation.
"We must not disregard our moral obligation to encourage, educate and enable our children, and provide opportunity for those adults returning to school," Haas wrote. "Let there be no doubt in the minds of our children and their families of the importance of education. Our financial stability and national prominence are at stake."
