The GVSU College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and Department of
Philosophy present a film screening and discussion of
CHAIQIAN/DEMOLITION, with 2009 Distinguished Alumnus-in-Residence J.P.
Sniadecki, on Friday, October 16, from 3-5 p.m., in BLL-110 Mackinac
Hall.
The 62-minute film presents a portrait of urban
space, migrant labor, and ephemeral relationships in the center of
Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan province in western China. The film
has been screened at international festivals
in Beijiing and
Vienna, and won the 2009 Cinéma du Reél – Joris Ivens Award.
Sniadecki graduated from Grand Valley in 2002 with a bachelor's
degree in philosophy. He is presently a doctoral candidate in the
Social Anthropology Department at Harvard University with an emphasis
on Chinese society and sensory ethnography. He began making films in
Michigan, focusing on his experience as an instructor in a prison
education program.
