GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- Grand Valley State University's Seidman
College of Business is hosting an economic expert to discuss "The
Great Recession of 2008-09."
Bradley R. Schiller of the University of Nevada, Reno, will
discuss the on-going economic crisis. While detrimental to the global
economy, Schiller says the recession never reached the level of The
Great Depression of the 1930's in measure of scope, duration and depth
of destruction. He says the federal government utilized both fiscal
and monetary policy maneuvers to end the worst of the current
recession. The short-term outlook is positive, thanks in great part to
the monetary stimulus that was enacted in September 2008. Fiscal
policy, under President Obama, has been somewhat less effective,
because of its focus on long-term structural issues, like energy
independence, rather than short-term results, such as, job creation.
Schiller is the author of "The Economy of Today,"
"Essentials of Economics" and "The Economics of Poverty
and Discrimination."
The event will be held on Friday, October 30. The breakfast will
start at 7:30 a.m. with the presentation at 8 a.m. in the Loosemore
Auditorium at Grand Valley's Pew Grand Rapids Campus. The breakfast
event is sponsored by the Seidman College of Business Alumni
Association. For reservations or more information, call (616) 331-7100
