Artist Marc Fischer: Labor, Economics, and Relating Art to Everyday Experience

The Visual Studies Studio of the GVSU Department of Art and Design, in association with the DAAC and UICA, present a series of events with Visiting Artist Marc Fischer. Marc Fischer is a member of the group Temporary Services. He is also the administrator of the project Public Collectors. With Temporary Services, Fischer was a co-founder of Mess Hall, an experimental cultural center in the Rogers Park neighborhood of Chicago. To date Temporary Services has produced 88 publications.

EXHIBIT: ART WORK: A National Conversation About Art, Labor, and Economics,
on display at the Urban Institute for Contemporary Arts, 41 Sheldon Blvd. Grand Rapids, attached to the (S)Edition: Prints as Activism exhibit. The exhibit will run from February 5 to March 5. An opening reception with the artist will be held on February 5, from 6-9 p.m.

ART WORK is a project of Temporary Services initiated at Spaces (similar to UICA) in Cleveland. Art Work is a newspaper and accompanying website that consists of writings and images from artists, activists, writers, critics, and others on the topic of working within depressed economies and how that impacts artistic process, compensation and artistic property. The newspaper will be on display and free copies available to visitors. Grand Rapids is one of many cities displaying and distributing the newspaper and hosting a discussion.

Marc Fischer of Temporary Services will join members of the local arts community in discussion of issues addressed in the ART WORK project. What are the global and local implications? An overview of ideas put forth in the project will be discussed. An analysis of local context and possibilities for how future cultural practice might be economically organized. Artists and others interested in cultural development should come with insights and ideas.
