Diversity theater sessions scheduled

The campus community is invited to participate in a unique experience that organizers hope will help create a more inclusive university.

Jeffrey Steiger, an artist-in-residence at the University of Michigan, will facilitate two weeks of informal dialogue sessions with students, faculty and staff members. Steiger is a member of the University of Michigan CRLT Players. The stories and dialogues he collects will anonymously be incorporated into an original production that depicts classroom dynamics, student experiences and faculty and staff work life.

Christine Rener, director of the Pew Faculty Teaching and Learning Center, said the CRLT Players have visited campus before to work with faculty groups. "They did such an outstanding job illuminating aspects of the faculty hiring process," Rener said. "Issues and concerns come alive in a way that spoke to the audience."

The diversity theater sessions and productions are sponsored by the Inclusion and Equity Division, FTLC, LGBT Resource Center, Office of Multicultural Affairs and Women's Center.

"Building a More Inclusive Grand Valley" sessions will run September 30-October 12. The 90-minute sessions are offered for students, faculty and staff members, or open sessions that anyone can attend. Register for a session by visiting www.gvsu.edu/seminar and select the "Inclusion and Equity" category.

The productions will be held November 2 on the Allendale Campus and November 3 on the Pew Grand Rapids Campus.
