A vibrant illustration by Grand Valley alumna BreeAnn Veenstra was selected to represent the university in the 2010 "Arts in the House" exhibition in Lansing, at the Anderson House Office Building, home to the Michigan House of Representatives. The exhibition, which includes a piece from each of the state's public universities, is a partnership between the President's Council, State Universities of Michigan and the Michigan House of Representatives to promote art in everyday life.
Veenstra's "The Ceryneian Hind," is a stylized pen and ink digital piece depicting a deer standing near a large flowering almond tree. "This piece was part of a series featuring various Greek myths and mythical creatures that I developed to create narrative illustrations suitable for children books featuring Greek mythology," said Veenstra. "The Ceryneian Hind was a cherished friend of the chaste goddess Artemis and was said to have golden antlers and the ability to outrun a speeding arrow."
The piece was purchased from Veenstra to be included in Grand Valley's permanent collection and is on loan to Lansing for the yearlong exhibition. The artist received a BFA with an emphasis in illustration from Grand Valley in December 2009. A native of Cadillac, she currently resides and works in Grand Rapids at a design imaging company and as a freelance artist.
Other work by Veenstra has been published in the national art magazine CMYK, as well as international publications ImagineFX and Ikarie, exhibited at the Grand Rapids Children's Museum, and received an award at the 2010 Society of Illustrators Student Competition in New York during a national competition that accepted only 140 entries from 6,000 submissions.
