Area eighth- and ninth-grade students will have the opportunity to
explore careers in the health sciences at a first-time camp at Grand
Valley State University.
Summer Health Activities and Professions Exploration (sHaPe)
will be held July 12-15 and July 19-22 at Grand Valley’s Cook-DeVos
Center for Health Sciences in downtown Grand Rapids.
sHaPe will allow students to participate in hands-on science
activities that include laboratories and simulations, gain
academically challenging scientific knowledge, and learn about
personal health and fitness.
The camp is designed for students entering eighth or ninth grade
— a key time when students are considering careers. They will enjoy
exercising in fun ways, making nutritious meals, collecting data in a
laboratory setting, using modern medical equipment, understanding
different types of therapies for various injuries and disabilities,
and experiencing a field trip to Spectrum Health Butterworth Campus.
Participants will explore the professions of clinical lab
science, nursing, occupational therapy, physical therapy, physician
assistant, radiation therapy, sonography, speech pathology, sports
medicine, and therapeutic recreation.
sHaPe is sponsored by the Regional Math and Science Center in
collaboration with faculty and staff from the College of Health
Professions, the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, and Kirkhof
College of Nursing.
