Cynthia McCurren, dean of the Kirkhof College of Nursing at Grand
Valley, was appointed to a state education council that will aid
transformation of nursing education in Michigan.
McCurren is one of 17 people named to the newly established
Michigan Nursing Education Council, which will act as an advisory
board to the Office of the Chief Nurse Executive, within Michigan’s
Department of Community Health. McCurren joined Grand Valley as dean
of KCON in 2007.
The MNEC is comprised of a mix of nursing practitioners and
policy-makers. MDCH Director Janet Olszewski said the council will
ensure that recent recommendations developed by the MDCH Task Force on
Nursing Education are implemented. Some of the recommendations include
creating a system of nurse residency programs in Michigan for all
newly licensed graduates, giving high priority to quality and safety
in all nursing education programs and increasing the number of
registered nurses educated in the state.
McCurren is also incoming president of the Michigan Association
of Colleges of Nursing.
The Kirkhof College of Nursing offers a doctor of nursing
practice program along with bachelor’s and master’s degree programs,
including programs for second-degree students and degree completion
programs for working registered nurses. The college also operates the
GVSU Family Health Center, on Sheldon Street in downtown Grand Rapids.
