GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — The Center for Entrepreneurship &
Innovation at Grand Valley State University will help local high
school students learn about entrepreneurship during its fourth annual
Teen Entrepreneur Summer Academy.
The academy, which runs June 21-23 on Grand Valley's Pew Grand
Rapids Campus, will feature 33 high school students from across
Michigan. This year’s academy will focus on developing innovative
ideas in the theme of urban farming, through which students will gain
awareness of small business and entrepreneurship opportunities in West
Michigan. By working hands-on with area entrepreneurs, students will
gain experience and learn about entrepreneurship as a viable career
choice.
The academy culminates with a team idea-pitch competition set
for June 23 from 10 a.m.-noon in the Loosemore Auditorium of the DeVos
Center. The winners of the competition will receive cash prizes
totaling $700. Admission to the competition is free, and media
coverage is encouraged.
Participating students were selected from a record number of
applications based on a formal application process, taking into
account GPA, teacher recommendations and a written essay. They
represent high schools including Northview, Ottawa Hills, East
Kentwood, Detroit Country Day, Forest Hills Central, Grand Rapids
Catholic Central, Grand Rapids Montessori, Unity Christian, Allendale
Christian, Jenison, Forest Hills Northern, Grand River Prep and
Kelloggsville.
