Michigan's Asian affairs commission to meet at Grand Valley

Michigan's Asian Pacific American Affairs Commission will hold a public meeting in the Kirkhof Center on the Allendale Campus of Grand Valley on Friday, June 4.

The commission reports to Gov. Jennifer Granholm. Two of its 21 members have West Michigan roots: Connie Dang is the director of GVSU's Office of Multicultural Affairs, and Bing Goei is chief executive officer of Eastern Floral and Republican candidate for a state House seat.

Commissioners on June 4 are scheduled to discuss current proposals in Lansing regarding enforcement of an immigration law, as Arizona recently did; and hear a presentation from Les Wong, president of Northern Michigan University. Grand Valley President Thomas J. Haas will make opening remarks.

The MAPAAC meets quarterly; Dang said this will be the commission's first meeting in West Michigan. Meetings are open to the public.

The meeting is scheduled to run from 9 a.m.-noon in the Pere Marquette Room of the Kirkhof Center. Parking is available in Lot H.
