Next 50th At Noon lecture studies athletics

The early years that set the stage for Grand Valley’s current athletic success will be the focus of the next event in the 50th At Noon Lecture Series.

Two retired faculty members, Joan Boand and Jim Scott, will talk about the early years of intercollegiate athletics and physical education during their presentation at noon Wednesday, November 10, in the Cook-DeWitt Center on the Allendale Campus. The event is free and open to the public.

Boand joined Grand Valley’s faculty in 1966 to teach aquatics. She soon found herself coaching Grand Valley’s first women’s varsity softball, basketball and volleyball teams. Scott joined the movement science (then physical education) faculty in 1968 and was soon asked to coach varsity wrestling. Both Boand and Scott are members of Grand Valley’s Athletic Hall of Fame.

A celebration to honor Scott’s 42-year tenure at Grand Valley will be held following the lecture, from 1:30-3 p.m., in the Alumni House. For more information on the reception, call the Movement Science Department at (616) 331-3044.
