Scott Stabler, assistant professor of history at Grand Valley State
University, has been selected to receive a Fulbright award to Ghana.
As part of the award, Stabler will strive to increase mutual
understanding between the people of the U.S. and Ghana.
Recipients of Fulbright awards are selected on the basis of
academic or professional achievement, as well as demonstrated
leadership potential in their fields. Stabler will use the grant to
study and teach at the University of Cape Coast in Ghana during the
winter semester, 2011.
"I will be teaching in both the College of Education and
for the Department of History," said Stabler. "My research
will focus on how schools in Ghana teach the history of the African
slave trade to the Americas. It should be interesting, seeing as Ghana
formed a major locale for the export of slaves."
Stabler has taught at Grand Valley since 2004, following
positions at Arizona State University, University of Houston and
elsewhere. Among his previous awards, in 2007, Stabler was honored as
Grand Valley's Inspirational Historian of the Year, and named Mel
Miller Mentor of the Year by the Michigan Council for Social Studies.
