Michigan's Asian Pacific American Affairs Commission held a public
meeting in the Kirkhof Center on June 4.
The commission reports to Gov. Jennifer Granholm. Two of its 21
members have West Michigan roots: Connie Dang is the director of Grand
Valley's Office of Multicultural Affairs, and Bing Goei is chief
executive officer of Eastern Floral and Republican candidate for a
state House seat.
During the meeting, Les Wong, president of Northern Michigan
University, gave a presentation on the challenges Asian Pacific
Americans face, and the assets they bring to business, education and
the public sectors.
Wong said since his early tenure as a faculty member he has been
fortunate to have found many mentors. He also said there are three
Asian Pacific Americans on President Obama’s cabinet. "Somehow
that is not getting down to the state and local levels of
government," he said.
MAPAA members also discussed current proposals in Lansing
regarding enforcement of an immigration law.
