During their weekend in California, the Duke and Duchess of
Cambridge met countless celebrities, dignitaries and at least one
Grand Valley alumna.
Meghan Wieten-Scott, who graduated in 2006 with a bachelor's
degree in public administration and a minor in women and gender
studies, met the royal couple while she was working for Blue Star
Families, a military organization that supports and empowers military families.
Wieten-Scott serves as a program manager and helped coordinate a
care package project that William and Catherine participated in.
"I have to say, they were the most genuine, down to earth
people I have met," Wieten-Scott said. "They were completely
focused on what we were saying, and looked us in the eye as we spoke
with them.
"I mentioned to Catherine that it was an honor to have her as
a part of our military spouse community, and she told us she really
hoped to implement some of these programs back home but she just
hasn't had the time."
Wieten-Scott's husband, Andrew, is an Army captain. The couple
is stationed in Anchorage, Alaska. As a military wife, Wieten-Scott
said it was important for her to continue to work at nonprofit
organizations. She began volunteering for Blue Star Families and then
was hired permanently.
