The contemporary music collective, New Music Detroit, is dedicated to performing challenging and dynamic works from the late twentieth century to the present day; from seminal new music 'classics' to innovative, genre-defying works written by today's emerging composers.
As the Free Play 20 concert, they will give a free performance
Wednesday, February 2, from 8-9:30 p.m., in the Large Dance Studio,
1600 Performing Arts Center, GVSU Allendale Campus.
Since its inception in 2007, NMD has presented local and world
premieres by a wide array of composers, from ground-breaking masters
such as John Cage, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Luciano Berio, Steve Reich,
and Philip Glass, to such exciting contemporary voices as Georges
Aperghis, Nico Muhly, Alexandra du Bois, Marc Mellits, and John Zorn.
NMD's founding members (Ian Ding-percussion, Erik
Ronmark-saxophones, Robert Tye-guitar, Adrienne Ronmark-violin/viola,
Gina DiBello-violin, and Daniel Bauch-percussion) all hold permanent
positions or close affiliations with such noted institutions as the
Detroit Symphony Orchestra, University of Michigan School of Music,
the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and the Minnesota Orchestra.
Outside of their ongoing performances, NMD may be best known for
their acclaimed festival Strange Beautiful Music, a daylong marathon
concert encompassing contemporary classical music, experimental jazz,
"noise", and electronic music, and other avant-garde genres.
