Marlen Vavrikova, assistant professor of oboe at Grand Valley, will perform Masek's Oboe Quartet in C Major with Vitezslav Cernoch, violin; Paul Swantek, viola; and Pablo Mahave-Veglia, cello. The performance Wednesday, January 26, from 4-6 p.m. in the Art Gallery, Performing Arts Center, GVSU Allendale Campus, will be followed by a reception in the Louis Armstrong Theatre Green Room. "Czech and Moravian Oboe Music," the CD by Vavrikova, recorded in 2008 at Grand Valley, will be on sale and is available on the Centaur label.
Marlen Vavrikova began her musical journey in the Czech Republic at
the Janacek Conservatory of Music in Ostrava. In 1996, she moved to
the United States to study at the Eastman School of Music (Master of
Music degree) and at the University of Illinois (Doctorate of Musical
Arts). She has performed with ensembles in Europe, Japan, and the
United States including Carnegie Hall's Weill Recital Hall.
Vavrikova's international background has guided her research.
She has published articles about contemporary Czech oboe music in
International Double Reed Journal and gave a lecture in
2005 at the International Double Reed Society Conference in Austin, Texas.
