Christopher Hitchens, Hauenstein Center debater, dies of cancer

Christopher Hitchens, a journalist and writer who took part in the first of two debates with his brother at a Grand Valley State University Hauenstein Center event in 2008, has died. He was 62.

Hitchens died on December 15, 2011, from complications of cancer of the esophagus, according to media reports.

The well-known Hitchens vs. Hitchens debate took place on April 3, 2008. Brothers Christopher and Peter Hitchens debated the Iraq War and religion. The brothers had nearly polar opposite opinions on many matters.

The debate was organized by the Hauenstein Center for Presidential Studies at Grand Valley State University, with support from the Center for Inquiry and the Interfaith Dialogue Association.
