Engineering and computing professors receive fellows

Paul Leidig and Nael Barakat, faculty members of the Padnos College of Engineering and Computing, were awarded with the distinction of fellow in their profession.

Paul Leidig, professor and director of the School of Computing and Information Systems, received the Association of Information Technology Professionals EDSIG (Educators Special Interest Group) Lifetime Distinguished Fellow achievement award at the annual Information Systems Education Conference in Nashville, Tenn.

He was honored for his sustained, long-term, meaningful and effective support of the organization’s ongoing mission to improve information systems education, help students, and foster the careers of information systems faculty. In bestowing the lifetime award, the board said he distinguished himself and advanced the profession of information systems education at the collegiate level.

Nael Barakat, associate professor and mechanical engineering program chair in the School of Engineering, has been named a fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.

The citation recognizes Barakat as a widely recognized scholar and teacher with expertise ranging from robotics and mechatronics, to engineering ethics and nanotechnology. He is noted as an accomplished leader in the engineering profession serving as a leader on the local, national, and international stages.

“Being named a fellow of a professional society is a rare and high honor. Only two to three percent of a society are selected for this grade,” said Paul Plotkowski, dean of the Padnos College of Engineering and Computing. “Nael and Paul are both tremendously successful in mentoring students and junior colleagues, and are both leaders in their fields.”
