Christopher Kierkus, associate professor of criminal justice; Jonathan White, professor of interdisciplinary studies and executive director of the Homeland Defense Initiative; and William Crawley, associate dean of the College of Community and Public Service and associate professor of criminal justice, were interviewed by the Grand Rapids Press, WOOD-TV and WZZM-TV for stories about the gunman who killed seven people in Grand Rapids.

James Dunn, professor of biology and an entomology specialist, was interviewed by WOOD-TV for a story about the devastation being caused to plant life by the Khapra beetle.

Matt McLogan, vice president for University Relations, was interviewed by WWMT-TV for a story about the death of Betty Ford.

Lisa Kasmer, assistant professor of mathematics, was interviewed by International Educator for a story about encouraging science, mathematics and engineering majors to study abroad.

Linda Kennedy, membership coordinator for WGVU, was interviewed by WGVU-AM for a story about her family’s part in the old Negro Baseball league and the upcoming celebrations in Grand Rapids and Detroit.

Sketches

Sean O’Neill, professor of history, gave a presentation, “U.S. Indian Policy During the Adams Administration,” at the Tri-Cities Historical Museum in Grand Haven.

Hugh Jack, professor of engineering, received the Best Presentation Award at the American Society for Engineering Education Conference in Vancouver, British Columbia, for “The 2011 State of Manufacturing Education.” He also co-wrote a presentation, “What is Curricula 2015?”

Engineering faculty members John Farris and Hugh Jack gave a presentation, “Enhanced Concept Selection for Students,” at the American Society for Engineering Education Conference in Vancouver, British Columbia.

Jeff Marcinkowski, assistant maintenance supervisor, completed the Educational Facilities Professional exam and earned certification as a facility professional.

A track from the New Music Ensemble CD, “In C Remixed,” directed by Bill Ryan, associate professor of music, was used in “Teen Wolf,” a new series on MTV.

Al Steinman, director of the Annis Water Resources Institute, was an invited expert panel member at the Michigan Youth Policy Summit, held at Western Michigan University and sponsored by the Keystone Center.

Andrea Bostrom, professor of nursing, received a grant from the U.S. Department of Labor for a project, “Michigan Nursing Corps: Simulation for the Integration of Psychiatric-Mental Health Clinical Learning Experiences.”
