Football team to raise funds for cancer while on the field

In a one-of-a-kind fundraiser during Grand Valley’s first football game, fans can pledge money to the American Cancer Society and Relay for Life depending on the team’s performance during the game.

During each home game, fans can pledge a certain amount of money toward the offense’s total yards, defense’s total tackles or the team’s overall points. For example, if a team puts up 400 yards in one game and 25 cents is pledged per yard, the pledge would total $100.

The fundraiser, Carries for the Cures, was created by Norman Shuford, junior running back for the Lakers football team. He was inspired by his dad who suffers from synovial sarcoma, a rare form of cancer that develops near joints. All proceeds from Carries for the Cures will go toward cancer research.

Student Senate is helping to promote the cause by posting flyers throughout Grand Valley’s campuses and encouraging people to visit the cause’s Facebook page. 

“I immediately loved the idea and knew that Student Senate would be happy to help spread the word about Carries for the Cures,” said Student Senate President Natalie Cleary. “This cause highlights the fact that at Grand Valley we believe in working together to support each other and the community.”
