Grand Rapids students learn about global economy

About 250 Grand Rapids Public School students will learn about what drives the local economy and how it affects their lives during Student Global Awareness Day on May 3. The event is part of World Trade Week West Michigan 2011 which is May 2-6.

Student Global Awareness Day introduces students to professionals in the international business community and provides insight on career preparation and career options related to international business. The program is a partnership between Junior Achievement, Grand Rapids Public Schools, Grand Valley State University’s Van Andel Global Trade Center and World Trade Week West Michigan. Sponsors include Amway, Comerica Bank, Infinite Sum, and Supply Chain Solutions.

The keynote speaker, Kala Gibson, senior vice President of Comerica Bank, will talk on “Preparing Yourself Today for a Successful Tomorrow.”

Two $1,000 scholarships will be given to winners of the annual Essay Scholarship Contest for the best essays discussing an international career or a global American product. Students will participate in breakout sessions on global manufacturing, global supply chain, language, culture, engineering and science.
