Grand Valley State University students and their families can
breathe a sigh of relief at one budget item for next year — for the
first time in the university’s history, the Board of Trustees voted to
freeze housing rates for all students living on campus next year at
2010 rates.
Whether students are returning to campus next
year or they are entering Grand Valley for the first time next year,
they will pay the same room rate that was set for fall 2010.
While Grand Valley’s Housing operation is self-supporting, the
opportunity to make this budget decision is tied into the university’s
overall climate of operating efficiently and putting the students
first. Faculty and staff accepted a pay freeze this year and are also
dealing with an increase to their health care costs.
“Our
goal is to keep higher education accessible and affordable for those
who want to study at Grand Valley,” President Thomas J. Haas said.
“Our Board leads the way in fiscal responsibility and doing the right
thing when it comes to our students. We know how families are
struggling right now, and we are so pleased to be able to freeze room
rates for students who will be living on campus in the coming
year.”
There is room for about 5,800 students on campus
and they pay a room rate based on the amenities of the unit and
whether they share it with roommates.
Housing
applications are currently being accepted for next year. For more
