An honor society that focuses on freshmen and sophomore students is
forming at Grand Valley State University.
The National Society of Collegiate
Scholars (NSCS) is the nation’s only honor society that recognizes
high-achieving first- and second-year students for their academic
accomplishments and provides them with opportunities to network with
other scholars, perform service activities on campus and apply for
scholarships.
Grand Valley senior Samantha Kraska will serve as president of
the organization. “I think it will be a great opportunity for some of
the underclassmen at Grand Valley because a lot of the honor societies
here induct mostly juniors and seniors. NSCS will allow newer students
to receive early recognition for their achievements and will provide
the tools to continue to perform at a high level,” she said.
Invitations went out to
students with a grade point average of 3.4 or higher this summer. An
induction ceremony is planned for September, where students will be
recognized by family, friends and the campus community.
“The new chapter on Grand Valley’s campus is a way for
high-achieving students to take advantage of the diverse opportunities
NSCS has to offer,” said Senta Sample, senior director of Chapter
Development for NSCS. “We’re looking forward to making this year the
first of many successful, engaging and exciting years for our
chapter.”
Grand Valley’s NSCS chapter will join the more than 280 NSCS
chapters across the nation, including Princeton University, the
University of Pennsylvania, Cornell University and the University of
Virginia.
