A version of the The Food Network’s Cupcake Wars was organized by
Campus Dining on Friday, February 18, at Fresh Food Company. Seven
teams of students competed in a 90-minute competition to make three
varieties of cupcakes made from scratch.
In honor of Presidents' Day, teams had to choose two ingredients
from a selection of U.S. Presidents’ favorite foods. Ingredients
included jelly beans, avocado, cherries, peanuts, sweet potatoes and bacon.
"We host competitions regularly to build employee morale," said Katey Borek, a chef at Fresh Food Company. "Cupcake Wars was just a fun event, but it was also a way to involve student workers."
Two teams incorporated bacon into their recipes, but the winning
team was a group of students from the Kirkhof Center who baked vegan
cupcakes.
Campus Dining staff Erin Gillis, Ethan McCann, Chuck Brown and
Katey Borek judged the teams on creativity, display and taste. Most
cupcakes were given out to Fresh Food customers after the competition.
