Students collect recyclables at football game

About 15 students collected cardboard packaging, pizza boxes and nearly 1,000 plastic bottles at Grand Valley’s football game Friday.

The recycling effort was organized by the Student Environmental Coalition (SEC) with support from the Sustainable Community Development Initiative, Athletics Department and Facilities Services, which provided bins and a truck to collect and transport materials to the main recycle bins on campus.

Student organizations have already expressed interest in getting involved at the next game, said SEC Project Manager Andy West. The group plans to attend the rest of the season’s home football games and hopes to start collecting recyclables at other sporting events like basketball and volleyball.

“I’m glad it worked out as well as it did,” West said. “We want to get the message across that we can collect even more recyclables if more students are involved.”

The Student Environmental Coalition is a service and advocacy organization intended to promote student interest in local, regional, and global environmental concerns. The group organizes educational events, campus cleanups, and community outreach programs at Grand Valley and in Grand Rapids.
