The Sustainable Agriculture Project (SAP) at Grand Valley is
kicking-off the farming season with three teams of horses that will
prepare the farming space next to Grand Valley for planting.
The event will take place Monday, April 18, at 10 a.m.; the
space is located on Luce Street, one-half mile west of 42nd St. in
Allendale. The event is free and open to the public.
The space was originally the Community Garden, founded in 2008,
and now be used for agriculture production. “We hope the project will
allow people to engage in building community relationships and learn
about organic farming through hands-on experience,” said Levi Gardner,
manager of SAP.
Gardner will lead the project to grow and harvest 30 crops,
ranging from herbs to tomatoes to lettuce. Harvested fruits and
vegetables from SAP will be sold at farmers’ markets, and excess crops
will be donated to the Student Food Pantry at Grand Valley, which
provides groceries to students who struggle to pay for food.
