Two campus events are planned this week to raise awareness and help
veterans who served during the Vietnam War.
For the second year, “Welcome Home” events are sponsored by
WGVU, Grand Valley’s Health and Wellness and the student veterans
organization. A 5K fun run and walk is set for Sunday, April 3, near
the Fieldhouse on the Allendale Campus; and WGVU will show its
documentary, “LZ Michigan: A Journey Home,” on Tuesday, March 29.
The 5K run/walk will begin at 2 p.m., rain or shine.
Participants are asked to gather in parking lot C West at 2 p.m. The
event is free but runners and walkers are encouraged to bring personal
care or non-perishable food items for the West Michigan Veterans
Assistance Program. Tim Eernisse, WGVU development and marketing
manager, said about 100 people are expected. At 3 p.m., a patriotic
mural will be unveiled at the Central Utilities Building.
The documentary will be screened at 6:30 p.m. at the WGVU studio
in the Eberhard Center. “LZ Michigan: A Journey Home” is an
award-winning documentary that features the stories of local war
survivors who talk about their feelings after returning home from the
unpopular war.
The screening is free and open to the public. For more
information on either event, visit www.gvsu.edu/veterans.
