Varied events mark Women's History Month at GVSU

A number of events — from lectures to high tea to theater — are planned at Grand Valley to mark March as Women’s History Month.

Events are sponsored by the Women’s Center and Women and Gender Studies; they are detailed below, and are free and open to the public. For more information contact the Women’s Center at x12748 or visit www.gvsu.edu/women_cen and click on “Upcoming Events.”

•   March 24, 3 p.m., Kirkhof Center, Grand River Room: EqualiTEA will celebrate Grand Valley’s 50th anniversary by using the past five decades of fashion as a backdrop. Members of the campus community will model clothing that defined the decades; high tea will be served at 3 p.m. RSVP by sending an e-mail to [email protected].

•   March 25, 1 p.m., Kirkhof Center, room 2004: In “Raising Voices Against Violence,” student-trained peer theater educators will present scenarios of dating violence, stalking and sexual assault. The program aims to raise awareness and create dialogue.

•   March 25, 7 p.m., Cook-DeWitt Center: Senior Anna Bennett will present her senior project, “Beyond Words: Your Gendered Experience,” which will showcase the creative submissions of students on the topic of gender and oppression and/or discrimination.

•   March 26, 8 a.m.-5 p.m., Eberhard Center: Michigan Women’s Studies Association Conference will present “Leading the Way,” a daylong conference highlighted by a keynote luncheon address from Susan Douglas, professor of communication studies at the University of Michigan. Pre-register online at www.gvsu.edu/wgs. Cost to attend is $60 for MWSA members, $70 for nonmembers and $50 for students. Participants can attend the luncheon only, cost is $30; register by sending an e-mail to Marion Davenport at [email protected].

•   March 28, 1 p.m., Zumberge Library: “In Her Own Words,” selections from the annual Women’s Center journal, will be read by students, faculty and staff members.

•   March 30, 5 p.m., Cook-DeWitt Center: “War on Terror and War on Trafficking” will feature Emi Koyama, a social activist and author, who will talk about her work with the LGBT community and the anti-human trafficking movement.
